One hundred fifty years ago, on March 21, 1863, Capt. Eathan Allen Pinnell of the Eighth Missouri Infantry (C.S.) noted distinguished visitors in his camp near Pine Bluff:
In camp – I this morning had the pleasure of seeing Lt. Gen’l E. Kirby Smith, who in company with Gen’l Frost arrived at the fort early this A. M. from Little Rock “via” the river. He is making flying visits to the river camps, left at 9 a.m. for Pine Bluff. The Gen’l is quite a pleasant looking man of about fifty, six feet high, black hair interspersed with gray, long heavy beard, once very black, now one showing white, dress plain. He brings us words that Gen’l Price will be in Little Rock ere many days and our forces at Port Hudson lately repulsed a fleet of Federal gun boats, with destruction to some of them and damage to others.
