One hundred fifty years ago, on April 19, 1863, Captain Eathan Allen Pinnell of the 8th Missouri Infantry (C.S.) wrote in his diary about the evils of camp life:
In camp – Yesterday P.M. our sutler brought into camp a quantity of whiskey, which he is selling rapidly at ten dollars a quart, which is having the effect of rapidly increasing the inmates of the guard house. My men are among the sober.
